Everything About Your Rod Licence

What is a rod licence?

A rod licence allows you to fish freshwaters in England & Wales. There may be certain restrictions from the landowner that may restrict you further, such as day tickets or syndicates for example. However, the best way to think of a rod licence is like a driver’s licence, you need one to fish, just like you need a driving licence to drive.

Where can I buy a rod licence?

A rod licence can be purchased/obtained from the .GOV website via this link https://www.gov.uk/fishing-licences or via the phone. Read below to understand what licence will suit you the best and what the licence allows you to do because there is a difference.

Licence sales and extensions Telephone: 0344 800 5386 Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm (except public holidays).

What rod licence should I buy?

At Browns, we sell coarse fishing equipment, such as Carp, Predator, and Match Fishing. So, we will mainly talk about rod licences for this discipline. However, if you intend to fish for Salmon or Sea Trout you will need to buy a Salmon & Sea Trout licence, please note this also covers you to fish for trout and coarse fish with up to 2 rods at a time. If you are not targeting Salmon or Sea Trout but wish to fish in freshwater, then you should buy a Trout & Coarse licence. The standard licence covers you to fish with up to 2 rods at a time, however, if you are a specimen angler and wish to fish with 3 rods, you will need to buy a 3-rod licence.

In 2018, the option became available for anglers to purchase a 2 or 3-rod licence. Before 2018, it was only possible to purchase a 2-rod licence, this caused an issue for many specimen anglers who wanted to fish with 3 rods (which is common practice for carp anglers these days). This meant 2x 2 rod licences had to be purchased. Nowadays, a 3-rod licence is available for anglers to purchase which works out cheaper than purchasing 2x 2-rod licences. Below is the breakdown of the licences you can purchase from the .GOV website or over the phone.

I’m only 15, do I need a rod licence?

One of the most common errors when fishing, and something that catches a lot of people out is the idea that if you are between the ages of 13-16, you do not need a rod licence. However, this is simply not the case. A rod licence still needs to be obtained for you to legally fish. The licence is free and can be obtained via the .GOV website or over the phone. This licence lasts for 365 days and will need to be renewed once this period has ended. The expiry date will be printed on the reverse of your rod licence. If you are under the age of 13, you do not need a rod licence to fish.

! You can get a fine of up to £2,500 if you’re fishing in these areas and cannot show a valid rod fishing licence when asked !
