What is the Difference between Angling and Fishing?

Fishing is the basic term to cover all types of means and tools to capture fish, while angling is a specific type of fishing that involves the use of hook rods to catch fish. All anglers are fishermen, but not all fishermen are anglers.

Main types of Angling in the UK

In the UK the main categories that your angling will fall into will be: Coarse Fishing, fly fishing or lure fishing. These types of fishing then spin off into other categories such as Carp fishing, Match fishing, Fly fishing and Lure fishing.

Carp Fishing

Carp fishing, in the most basic terms possible, is going out to specifically catch the carp species using a rod, reel and various other fishing tackle. Carp fishing has its own specific fishing methods that are rarely used for other types of fishing.

This form of fishing usually requires great patience as the angler can sometimes wait for days just for one bite.

Match Fishing

Match fishing is a hugely popular and enjoyable sport, undertaken the world over. In the UK, there are regular matches throughout the year, taking place in all kinds of venues. The typical angling match sees multiple anglers arrive early at the venue, eagerly awaiting the draw.

The event organiser or fishery owner oversees as each angler draws a “peg” around the venue, where they must fish for the length of the match.

Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is a form of fishing that utilises a special type of fishing tackle; a fly rod, fly reel, fly line and the fly’s themselves. The fly’s are intended to imitate semi-aquatic insects or insects landing on the surface of the water. Using the specially weighted fly line, rod and reel, the fly is propelled into the water with a series of casts to ensure the required distance is achieved.

This method is designed to entice the fish to take the fly, therefore, being hooked and landed. This method is commonly used to fish for trout but can be used to fish for many other species.

Lure Fishing

Lure fishing is a form of angling that is commonly used to catch predatory species. In the UK this is mainly to catch Pike or Perch, however, this method can be used to catch other species.

This method requires the angler to use an artificial bait (usually designed to imitate a small fish) cast into the water to fool the target species into wanting to eat it, resulting in the fish getting hooked and hopefully landed.
